Dubai hopes to compete with Heathrow
The Dubai International Airport has great ambitions and hopes to compete in terms of number of passengers and flights, with London's Heathrow airport. It hopes to win first place by 2016.
The CEO of Dubai International Airport said the passenger traffic inside the airport is expected to increase by 7.2% annually for the next decade, therefore it will be able to attract about 98, 5 million passengers by 2020. The great growth of the airport is due mostly thanks to the state airlines, including Emirates and Flydubai. Furthermore, in order to meet the growing demand for air travel to these destinations a second airport will open, which is available for cargo flights, but open to passengers by 2012. The new airport will be able to accept about 160 million passengers each year.
