Solar Island CSEM UAE
The Solar Island prototype is a Swiss-designed artificial island which
has been built in the gulf state of Ras Al Khaimah, in the UAE with the
aim of providing a source of clean energy.
The project, a
collaboration between Neuchâtel's Swiss Center for Electronics and
Microtechnology (CSEM) and the local government. The solution proposed
by the centre was to build artificial islands that can sit offshore,
where surface is not a problem. To cut costs, the usual solar panels are
not be used, but rather a concentrator that heats water running through
pipes. The steam is then used to generate electricity. Because of its
floating structure, the island could be easily turned to always face the
sun, generating maximum power. The prototype has been built with a
diameter of 100 metres, one-tenth of the size of an actual solar island.
Initial tests have taken place on land, with the island floating on a
water channel.
CSEM-UAE History
In the late 2004 The CSEM-UAE
was launched as a result of the visionary plans of the government of Ras
Al Khaimah in UAE. At that time, H.H. Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qassimi
The Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah was concerned with
accelerating the transformation of the emirate into one of the most
exciting business and lifestyle destinations in the region and CSEM
Switzerland was concerned with the expansion of its activity to a fast
industrial developing regions.
Early 2005, CSEM Switzerland
started settling in Ras Al Khaimah, with its Swiss engineers teamed up,
local and regional team of specialists joined and CSEM-uae offices and
state of art laboratories started. Projects of generic interest to local
economy was defined and agreed with Dr. Khather Massaad, Advisor to The
Crown Prince & Deputy Ruler of RAK and Chief Executive Officer of
Ras Al Khaimah Investment Authority (RAKIA), which funded them.
2006,
CSEM-UAE was fully operational and RAKIA started getting significant
success in attracting worldwide investments in developing local
industries. Fruitful interaction between the CSEM-uae and this local
industry started.
2007, the Government of Ras Al Khaimah
allocated to CSEM-UAE 87,000 m² of land in the industrial zone to build a
world unique Solar R&D facilities which can be open to co-operation
with world leading academic, technology and industrial development
centers. Solar-Island prototype was proposed. It was designed to
evaluate technologies to build cost effective solar power plants.
2008,
the construction of a 5,000 m² platform of a Solar-Island demonstrator
was achieved; in parallel a Photovoltaic performance test and the Solar
thermal centers was built. The Solar Radiation and the weather stations
were installed.
2009, the proposal of a new organization
focusing on short term projects adding value to local economy was
developed. The aim, to reduce the need of electricity produced from
fossil energy. The hovering test of the Solar-Island platform was
successfully performed.
2010, CSEM-UAE started building Solar
Cool Research Center and Solar facilities to develop Solar Insulation
Material, Solar Assisted Air Conditioning and Waste Heat or Solar
Assisted Water Desalination. The evaluation of projects with carbon
credit started. The Solar-Island precision tracking test was
successfully performed.
2011, CSEM-UAE successfully tested in
Februaryv 2011, the Solar Cooling center with 1 ton of refrigeration and
decided its extension to 10 ton of refrigeration.
CSEM-UAE
operates from its offices in Al Jazeera Al Hamra and has Solar R&D
facilities (Solar-Island platform, Solar Cool center, Photovoltaic
performance test center and Thermal R&D center) nearby. Mother
company is in Switzerland and Sister Company in Brazil.
CSEM-UAE
aims to be one of the best innovation centers worldwide, providing novel
applications and solutions to local economy and worldwide customers by
developing and using unique Solar and Clean Technology platforms, thus
adding value to the results of research and maturing products to
regional markets.
